Treating Gum Disease

In the early stages of gum disease, characterized by redness, swelling and bleeding gums, minimally invasive non-surgical treatment can reverse gum disease. It is important to have regular dental checkups to increase your chances of early detection and conservative treatment. Gum disease treatment usually begins with a cleaning accompanied by Laser Bacterial Reduction and oral hygiene instruction as to the proper means of brushing and flossing at home. In addition some patients may need what is called scaling and root planing. Scaling is the process of scraping off the tartar on the tooth above and below the gum line. Root planing gets rid of rough spots on the tooth root where the bacteria flourish, and helps remove this bacteria. Scaling and root planing is sometimes accompanied by Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy. The goal of the initial treatment is to reduce the depths of the pockets around affected teeth and control the bacteria and inflammation associated with periodontal disease. At this point many patients experience immediate improvement. However, if symptoms do not significantly improve, conventional periodontal surgery may be indicated for some cases.
