TMJ - Facial Pain

Do you wake up with a stiff or tired jaw? Are your teeth sensitive to temperature?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, you could be grinding or clenching your teeth when you sleep. This is a condition called bruxism and left untreated over time may develop into Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder. TMJ affects millions of Americans every day which causes them to suffer from chronic facial and neck pain as well as recurrent headaches. Symptoms of TMJ include:

  • Pain in the jaw area
  • Pain, ringing, or stuffiness the ears
  • Frequent headaches or neck aches
  • Clicking or popping sound upon opening
  • Swelling on the sides of the face
  • Muscle spasms in the jaw area
  • A change in the alignment of top and bottom teeth
  • Locked jaw or limited opening of the mouth

Should you notice any of these symptoms, let us know. We can help advise you as to whether they indicate the presence of TMJ. Many times a night guard appliance is all you need. A night guard is a custom-made, clear, thin, removable appliance that fits over your upper teeth allowing you to sleep more comfortable at night and wake up without the pain from grinding and clenching while you sleep.
